MOBILE, ALA, FOXTV10, April 28, 2009. The Gulf Coast said goodbyt to one of the most beloved radio personalities this weekend. Arthur Ray Russell Jr, know as "Ray Ray" was a big supporter of organ donation. For thousands of Americans, being on the waitlist for an organ donation is a matter of lift and death.
Ray Ray never got his transplant. He was just 42-years old when he died from congestive heart failure. Dr. Errol Crook told FOX10 News," At this point it's estimated to be over 100,000 people waiting on an organ of some sort." Reports estimate that more than half of those people will die waiting. Dr. Crook said there's a big need for organ donations. The shortage mostly stems from lack of understanding and awareness. He added, "The most important factor in organ donation is you have to have a blood type match." And the more donors there are, the greater the chance of finding a match, Dr. Crook said, "The opportunity is in the living donations. That is a big push in kidney transplants. In fact, there are more kidney transplants done from living donors than there are from deceased donors now-a-days."
