INDIVIDUALS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Ever thought of having one of those pink dots on your driver's license?

Powegian Kathleen Stark hopes more residents will do so, after spotting a bumper sticker that she and local firefighters have displayed on their personal vehicles.

The sticker says, “Got the dot? Be a Hero,” and is sponsored by the nonprofit group Donate Life, which encourages organ and tissue donations.

Stark and her daughter Brooke, 15, a Poway High School student, appeared before state legislators last week to endorse a 30-minute program geared to educate high school students about the benefits of becoming an organ donor.

The proposal passed 7-1 and will go forward to another committee, Stark said.

Students between 13 and 17 can sign up, but, as minors, their parents will make the ultimate choice, until they reach 18. Those who want to register for the transplantation program can register online at http://www.donateLIFE california.org, or at local Department of Motor Vehicles offices.

As a Lifesharing ambassador, part of the Donate Life program, Stark knows the value of a transplant. After her daughter Brittany died in 1998, she and her husband, Peter, donated their daughter’s corneas to two male recipients. For the full story:
