Sports and academics aren't the only areas college students compete. Starting in October 2009, college students in Maryland will have the opportunity to challenge rival schools in an organ/tissue donor designation drive aimed at increasing the number of registered organ, eye and tissue donors in the community. The goal of the Donate Life Maryland Campus Challenge is not to win a competition or earn a better grade. The goal is to save lives!-----------------------------------
WHY IS THIS CAMPAIGN IMPORTANT?
Nearly 2,000 people are currently waiting for organ transplants in Maryland and more than 100,000 people nationally are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. Registering to be an organ, eye and tissue donor offers regular, everyday people a way to be extraordinary heroes and lifesavers. Becoming a designated donor is easy. All someone has to do is say “yes” and share their wishes with their family and friends. One person can save up to nine lives through organ donation, enhance up to 50 lives through tissue donation and provide the gift of sight to two people through cornea donations.
-----------------------------------
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
From October 1 to November 20, 2009, colleges and universities in the Baltimore area will be challenging each other to register the most designated organ, eye and tissue donors.
Each participating campus will form a Campus Challenge Home Team, which will manage activities on their campus and work closely with the Living Legacy Foundation and Washington Regional Transplant Community staff. Additionally, members of the Home Team will receive “Donation 101” training which will provide organ, eye and tissue donation education and outreach training so that the Home Team members will be able to provide education and awareness to other fellow students about organ and tissue donation. Staff from the Living Legacy Foundation will also be available to provide additional education and support as needed throughout the challenge.
So, grab friends, engage sororities, fraternities, residence halls or involve other student groups to help raise awareness for organ and tissue donation. Be a hero and help spread the word about saving lives through organ, eye and tissue donation.
