AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER)---With more than 100,000 people estimated to be on the organ transplant wait list in the U.S., officials in the state are now working to promote the importance of being a donor.
According to Donate Life America, more then 90 percent of people nationally support organ donation but only 30 percent know how to enroll as a donor. Currently most people in Maine are likely to change their status when it comes time to renew their driver's license.
By the end of the month, officials hope to make it possible for them to do it directly through the state's website. Lawmakers in the Maine House of Representatives have also passed a joint resolution to make April "Donate Life Month" in the state.
"The importance of the focus of this cannot be lost," said Secretary of State Matt Dunlap, "but we also should remember that this is not something we do on one day, or in one month, or in one year...it is something that is going to be a perpetual opportunity to overcome tragedy with the gift of life every single day."
