NATIONAL DONATE LIFE MONTH-BUFFALO, NY-NEW POSSIBLE LAW SAYS DONATE ORGANS

video

BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) -- When you go to the Department of Motor Vehicles to get a drivers license you have the option to register as an organ donor. But new state legislation in the works right now would automatically put you on that donor list, unless you decline. "If I don't give you an ok to take something from me then you shouldn't be able to take it," one person said after hearing about the possible new law.

"I'm pretty fine with that," another person said who was renewing their license at a DMV in downtown Buffalo.

Organ donor companies remind that just one donor can save up to eight lives and there are 10,000 people on a waiting list just in New York State. "There are over 107,000 people in America who are waiting for an organ and 11% of those are from New York State," Thea Tio, spokesperson for Upstate New York Transplant Services in Buffalo, said. "18 people die every day waiting for an organ, so the need is great."
