To help kick-off National Donate Life Month, Donate Life Connecticut annually brings together state and local officials, as well as organ donor families and transplant recipients, and health professionals in early April to bring attention to the importance of becoming an organ donor and how it saves lives. Sayers, who represented Speaker of the House Christopher G. Donovan (D-Meriden) at the event, noted that as house chair of the public health committee five years ago she worked with Donate Life and fellow legislators to improve and expand the process for organ donations.
"Together, we made Connecticut the first New England state to have an organ donor registry, which incorporates people who have given their consent through the Department of Motor Vehicles," Sayers said. "We have seen an increase in the number of declared donors in our state and made more organs available to those in need of transplants."
There are currently 970,000 Connecticut drivers that have registered as organ donors, but Sayers said the battle is far from over as a state resident dies weekly because an organ did not become available in time. Sayers encouraged people to register as an organ donor when renewing their license at the DMV or local AAA office, or by visiting www.donatelifect.org
