East Haven, Conn. (WTNH) - A man who started out as little more than a stranger to East Haven Mayor April Capone Almon, is now calling her his saviour because she gave him one of her kidneys when he was in dire need.

Thursday was the first time Carlos Sanchez saw East Haven's mayor outside the hospital since she gave him a kidney. Three weeks ago, April Capone Almon underwent transplant surgery to give Sanchez, originally just a Facebook friend her left kidney. "You look so good, are you good," questioned Mayor Almon outside of the hospital. "I feel good, I feel good, I feel good," replied Sanchez.

Sanchez is a diabetic and doctors told him he needed a live kidney transplant to get better. Sanchez posted his plea on Facebook and the mayor responded. Tests proved she was a perfect match, but the mayor still had to get through a rough re-election campaign. "Do what you have to do, nobody has to know, I don't want to interfere with your campaigning," said Sanchez.

The transplant was successful and now the two are talking about it publicly to promote awareness about live organ donation. "What I got out of this far exceeds anything that I have given," said Mayor Almon. "I want people to know how painless it is to do."

Doctors say both are doing well, and now the two are more than just Facebook friends, they are friends for life.
