On Monday Fayetteville Mayor Lioneld Jordan officially proclaimed April 2010 "Donate Life Month," in the city.
The proclamation came outside Washington Regional Medical Center. The hospital recently received a medal of honor from the government for its success in increasing the number of organs available for life saving transplants.
"It's a way that something good can come out of a tragedy," said Sheryl Davis, director of critical care. Nationally, an average of 77 people each day are saved due to organ transplants. Three of them were at Monday's proclamation. They got to meet each other for the first time.
One of the recipients is Fayetteville Cobbler Jeff Clardy, who just received a new heart nine weeks ago. He had the honor of raising the new "Donate Life" flag in front of the hospital's main entrance.
"It's huge for us to get the message out to the people, these donors are like family, even though we didn't meet them, they're just like family," said Clardy.
However, there is always more that can be done. Every day in the United States an average of 19 people die because there is not a suitable organ donor available. Currently there are 106 thousand people on the waiting list, 300 of which are from Arkansas. In order to become a donor you can sign up when you receive or renew your driver's license.
