TUCSON - The month of April is officially "Donate Life Month" to call attention for the need of organ and tissue donors in Arizona. Its also a time to recognize those who've saved peoples lives. According to the Donor Network of Arizona, more than 1,900 people are waiting for an organ transplant in Arizona. The majority of those people need kidneys to live. More than 106,000 people are waiting for a transplant in the United States.
Thanks to one donor, Tucsonan Annette Jones was able to get a second chance at life. Jones went through 3 kidney transplants, resulting in the first two to be unsuccessful. With the help from a friend, she did not have to wait long for the third transplant. "My friend just came forward and said I want to be a donor. I want to be tested to see if I can help you. I'm just so greatful for her everyday," said Jones.
According to the Donor Network of Arizona, there has been a 400 percent increase of Arizonans signing up to become organ and tissue donors.
