KSDK -- A Breese, Illinois teenager who died saving a friend from drowning is now helping save the lives of as many as 75 others. Allan Horstmann's parents honored his wish to donate his organs, giving dozens the gift of life.
17 year old Allan Horstmann died on Carlyle Lake trying to save a friend from drowning.
Allan managed to help rescue his friend, but was unable to get himself out the rough water.
Following Allan's death his parents remembered one of wishes. Allan wanted to donate his organs and had made preparations to see that it would happen.
"I came across the form the other day after the funeral and he never mailed it in but I knew what he wanted, "said his mother, Cheryl Horstmann.
Allan's parents said they were proud to turn their grief into a gift of life thanks to Mid America Transplant Services.
"They took eyes, bone and other tissues," said Cheryl Horstmann.
The Horstmann's say the organ donation is fitting for a teen who lived his life, and died helping others.
