East Texas hospital honored for eye tissue donations
LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - It is a big recognition for an East Texas hospital.
Monday, members of the Southwest Transplant Alliance honored Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview for the donation of eye tissue in 2009. Seventeen people were able to give tissue that restored the sight of up to 34 people.
Ed Banos, CEO of Good Shepherd, says the need is great.
"We need to spread the word to be sure that more people will become organ donors, because really it is a gift to the community, and a gift to another family," said Banos.
"The Lord has blessed me to be able to see things clearly to where I could not see things, and he has enabled me to drive again," said Sherry Wright, a transplant recipient.
Since 2001, ocular donations from Good Shepherd have provided 111 corneas for transplant.
