Perks for organ donors could cut waiting times
Organ donation is not very popular in Switzerland. If you need a kidney transplant in this country, you’ll have to wait up to three years. It is illegal to buy organs, but living donors—who are usually close relatives of the recipient—can get compensation for lost salary, hospitalization costs and lifelong medical follow up. So SwissTransplant, the nongovernmental office charged with finding organ donors, has suggested families be allowed to receive compensation for travel or even money to pay for donors’ funerals:
