Newark Teen's Organs Give Gift of Life
MYFOXNY.COM - A New Jersey teenager whose life was taken way too early helped five other people live.
Suzanne Gonzalez, 43, has a second chance at life thanks to Maria Pomavilla, an 18-year-old who died in April. Suzanne, who was dying, received Maria's liver in a transplant. Wednesday, Suzanne met Maria's family.
Maria was the victim of a hit-and-run at a Newark intersection less than two blocks from her home. Her family came to their daughter's school for an emotional tribute and where students and the recipients of her organs honored the young girl.
Maria's friends say it is hard to walk down the hallways without her, but satisfying to know her generosity in life lived on after death.
"It was a whole year of preparing to die- and now I can live and I've got to embrace it," Suzanne says. "It's very bittersweet because I really feel for the family losing their daughter regardless the way they did."
Just weeks before her death, Maria and her brother learned about organ donation at Eastside High. After she died, her brother remembered that lesson and convinced the family to donate Maria's organs.
