A documentary filmmaker, health advocates and federal officials are coming together this Thursday, July 15, 2010, to lead a discussion on health issues critical to Asian and Pacific Islander American communities and an inspirational upcoming feature documentary film, THE POWER OF TWO.

Yul Kwon, Survivor: Cook Islands champion and Deputy Chief of the Consumer & Government Affairs Bureau of the Federal Communications Commission, twin global health advocates Anabel Stenzel and Isabel Stenzel Byrnes, and Academy Award nominated producer Marc Smolowitz (The Weather Underground, 2003) will present at a briefing produced in conjunction with the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) on July 15 at 10:00 a.m. in the Capitol Visitor Center, room HVC-215.

The Stenzel twins, stars of THE POWER OF TWO, who have endured a life-long battle against the fatal genetic disease Cystic Fibrosis and received life-saving double lung transplants, will recount their experiences advocating for these health causes globally and discuss the importance of organ donation among minority communities. The film is inspired by the Stenzel twins’ 2007 memoir, “The Power Of Two: A Twin Triumph Over Cystic Fibrosis.”

Rep. Mike Honda (D-CA), CAPAC’s Chairman and member of the Advisory Board of THE POWER OF TWO, will deliver opening remarks. Mr. Kwon, a well-known advocate for bone marrow donation, will address the importance of bone marrow donation registration for Asian & Pacific Islander Americans. Corinna Dan, Hepatitis B Policy Fellow, Association of Asian Pacific American Community Health Organizations (AAPCHO), will speak about the policies and practices around treating and preventing transmission of hepatitis B.

WHAT: Briefing on health issues critical to Asian & Pacific Islander American communities and preview of upcoming feature documentary film, THE POWER OF TWO.

WHEN: Thursday, July 15, 2010, 10:00 a.m.

WHERE: Capitol Visitor Center, room HVC-215, Washington, DC

Mr. Smolowitz and his team will film the briefing for THE POWER OF TWO, which follows the Stenzel twins’ journey from patients barely able to breathe to international public health advocates.

The team comes to Washington on the heels of a highly successful series of events in Los Angeles, where they served as the red carpet film crew at the Donate Life Film Festival in Beverly Hills, and generated support for the project with Golden Globe nominated actor and musician Jack Black. While in Washington, Smolowitz and his crew will be filming interviews with key health leaders for THE POWER OF TWO, including

  • Dr. Bob Beall, President & CEO of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation;
  • Dr. Clive Callender, LaSalle D. Leffel, Jr. Professor of Surgery, Howard University College of Medicine, and founder of the National Minority Organ/Tissue Transplant Education Program (MOTTEP);
  • Dr. Francis Collins, NIH Director and the former director of the Human Genome Project who discovered the Cystic Fibrosis gene;
  • Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA); and
  • Rear Admiral USPHS and former Acting U.S. Surgeon General Kenneth Moritsugu.
On July 17, Smolowitz and the Stenzel twins will travel to Richmond, Virginia, to visit with local lung transplant recipients at the National Donor Memorial. The trailer for THE POWER OF TWO, which is anticipated to premiere in early 2011, can be found at http://tinyurl.com/Powerof2Trailer.
