The site will allow people to sign up as organ donors with a few clicks of the mouse, says Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap. | |
People in Maine who want to become organ donors can now do so online. Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap says people can now add their names to the Maine Organ Donor Registry with a few clicks of the mouse. At an announcement of the new service this morning, Dunlap was joined by Ashley Drew, 23, who's on the waiting list for a double-lung transplant, and Patti Campbell, whose 22-year-old son's organs were donated after he died of a head injury. Campbell says her son signed up as an organ donor just months before he died. In the past, Dunlap says, Mainers could register as organ donors when renewing or replacing their drivers' licenses. He says that left out a lot of people who hold non-driver identification cards. Beginning this year, he says, any credential holder can sign up as an organ donor, either online or at a motor vehicle branch office. In Maine nearly 500,000 drivers' license holders have already added their names Maine Organ Donor Registry. |
