DONATE LIFE ORGAN DONATION AWARENESS-OHIO

MedCentral/Lifeline of Ohio Promote Organ, Tissue Donation

To help spread the word about organ and tissue donation, MedCentral Mansfield Hospital, in conjunction with Lifeline of Ohio, hosted a "Don't Let Another Chair Go Empty" awareness event Wednesday in its hospital main lobby.

Employees, medical personnel, patients and visitors were all encouraged to stop by the main lobby to register to be an organ, eye and tissue donor and talk to local individuals who have been touched by donation. In addition, attendees also had the opportunity to sit down in Lifeline of Ohio's Green Chair to share how organ and tissue donation has impacted their life.

Lauren Fitting of Lifeline of Ohio said the goal of the Green Chair is to bring to mind the many different people affected by organ, eye and tissue donation, such as recipients, donor families, those waiting for as transplant and the families of those who died waiting.

Fitting said the Green Chair is intended to be an icon of hope and encouragement that as the number of registered donors increases, the fewer empty chairs.

Currently, there are more than 108,000 people waiting in the United States for a lifesaving organ transplant. Statistically, 18 of those people die each day waiting.

Fitting said by choosing to become an organ and tissue donor, one person can save 8 lives and change the lives of 50 people.
