BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Louisiana Hospital Association says a campaign at more than 65 hospitals around the state has helped increase Louisiana's organ donor registry by 250,000 people - more than 15% - since last August.
The hospitals and the Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency said Wednesday they plan to keep working together.
LHA spokeswoman Michele Clement says there's no way to tell how many people signed up because of the hospital campaign. She says LHA hopes to make it possible to tell, with a registration question about where people heard about organ donation.
LOPA says Louisiana now has more than 1.8 million registered donors. Its Donate Life Louisiana campaign has a goal of 2.2 million by 2014. Using current Census estimates, that would 68% of state residents who are at least 18 years old.
