(Cleveland)- 57-year-old Richard Gates received a heart transplant six years ago and now he is taking a bicycle ride from Cleveland to Boston.
Gates received a heart in Boston from Dr. James Fang, now with University Hospitals. He was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy at the age of 52 and received a heart from an anonymous organ donor.
Gates says he is doing this as a way to celebrate his second chance at life, to honor the donor, and to help raise awareness for organ donation.
He left Wednesday morning from University Hospitals for the 780 mile long ride. Gates will make rest stops along the way stopping at medical centers to visit patients waiting for transplants, showing them what's possible.
