New Mexico Donors Now Number 1 Million
ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - With about half of New Mexico's people now signed up New Mexico Donor Services celebrated the registration of its one-millionth organ donor Wednesday.
The event was held at the state Motor Vehicle Division office at Montgomery Plaza in Albuquerque to note most registrations come as New Mexicans obtain or renew driver's licenses and ID cards. The licenses and ID indicate whether the person is an organ and tissue donor.
Transplant recipients and donor families and registered donors attended the morning event intended to inspire even more people to agree to be organ and tissue donors after their deaths.
According to Donor Services, there are 108,000 men, women and children in the United States awaiting life-saving transplants with an average of 19 of those people dying each day before an appropriate organ can be found. There are currently 687 New Mexicans needing transplants, Donor Services said.
More information on becoming a donor can be found by visiting local MVD offices or the New Mexico Donor Services website.
