The Goshen community poured out its heart and soul on Sunday to help a local high school student in need of a transplant.

Just last year doctors diagnosed 18-year-old Barrett Younghans with dilated cardiomyopathy, a disease that attacks the heart.

In order to survive, he'll need a heart transplant.

So Sunday after hundreds of hours of planning, students at the Merit Learning Center hosted a fundraiser for Barrett.

Those in attendance were able to enter a corn bag tournament among dozens of other games and a raffle contest.

More than 10 people signed up to be organ donors at Sunday's fundraiser but that's just a small step in the right direction.

Statistics show 18 Hoosiers die each day waiting for an organ donation.

"What you have to do is try to put yourself in their shoes and do whatever you can to help them in return,” said Sarah Paxton, a senior at Merit Learning Center. “You can't just pass something like that up. I mean if I needed a heart transplant I would really hope that someone would be willing to help me out."

“He truly is our hero. I mean he has handled this so much better then I think we would have handled this as adults to be put in the same spot, he's never blinked,” said another supporter of Barrett.

Sunday’s event was one of nearly a dozen service projects the school hosts every year.
