Organ Donation Pledges Urge

WJBK FOX 2 | myFOXDetroit.comShow your heart, especially on your driver's license, because that is the way you are officially known as an organ donor. Henry Ford Health System is asking Michiganders to sign up.
The simple heart symbol on a driver's license is what it takes to say, "Yes, I will donate my organs."
Currently less than one quarter of Michigan drivers have pledged organ donation, and it's just not enough.
Henry Ford Health System is striving for 5,000 organ donors pledges this year.
"Typically when you go to renew your driver's license at the Michigan Secretary of State, they don't come right out and ask 'Do you want to be a donor?' So, it's up to us to make that decision and take the initiative to sign ourselves up on the donor registry," said Stephanie Sommer with Gift of Life Michigan.
We asked Sommer about the difference someone can make if they are a donor.
"One organ donor can save up to nine lives," she responded.
Right now, more than 3,000 people in our state are waiting on a new organ. 2,400 are waiting for kidneys, and 331 need new livers. Just one donor can help 50 people.
A red heart donor sticker will be mailed to you after you register. Click here to enroll and to get more information.
Remember, you're never too old to donate, and it does not compromise the doctor's efforts to save your life.
