INTERNATIONAL ORGAN DONATION AWARENESS - JAPAN

Brain dead donor organ transplant recipient gives birth in Japan first

OSAKA -- A woman who received a pancreas and kidneys from a brain-dead donor in 2007 gave birth to a baby boy here on the evening of Oct. 13, making her the first such organ recipient to have a child in Japan.

Both mother, who is in her 40s, and child are in good condition following the birth by Caesarean section, according to Osaka University Hospital.

"I want to deeply thank the donor's family. If I hadn't had the transplant, my new life would never have happened," the woman was quoted as saying. She is scheduled to be released from hospital on Oct. 21.

According to Osaka University professor Toshinori Ito, who was the attending physician for the woman's 2007 transplant operation, she had been on dialysis since about the age of 20 due to type 1 diabetes, and registered with the transplant network in 2000. In hopes of having a child after her transplant, in 2009 she began taking a type of immunosuppressant drug that would allow conception. The woman conceived twice, with the first pregnancy failing.

A pregnant woman's kidneys must filter urine produced by the fetus out of her blood, putting added pressure on the organs. This means women with renal failure or other severe kidney conditions usually cannot support a fetus in the womb even if they conceive, according to the deputy head of the hospital's transplant unit Norihide Fukushima, making the woman's successful pregnancy all the more remarkable.

"The life received from the donor is tied to yet another new life, all because of the transplant," says Michikata Okubo, chairman of the Japan Transplant Recipients Organization. "This is a truly amazing product of transplant medicine. I think it's excellent."
