Clemson - Carolina Split Victories in Blood and Organ Competition
by Anna Simpson | Greenville OnLine
Clemson University won the second annual organ and tissue donor drive associated with the gridiron rivalry between South Carolina’s two largest universities and the University of South Carolina won the blood drive, in a competition where everybody wins, especially those receiving blood or medical transplants.
Donate Life South Carolina and LifePoint announced Monday that the 2010 Donate Life Duel signed up 1,452 newly registered organ and tissue donors in a close competition.
Clemson won by only 170 participants, garnering support from 56 percent of organ and tissue donors – to USC’s 44 percent – of those who signed up during the competition at the new South Carolina Organ and Tissue Donor Registry at www.Every11Minutes.org.
Gamecocks won the 26th annual blood drive competition between the rivals, with fans giving up 4,038 units of blood compared to 2,575 units given by Tigers, said Angela Nixon, a Clemson spokeswoman.
Clemson has won the blood drive 14 years and USC has won 12 years, Nixon said.
