Man Gets Kidney From Kasey Kaufman
David Sears, KSAT 12 News Reporter
SAN ANTONIO -- Six months ago, Rebecca Edwards and her ex-husband, Kevin Kaufman, had never heard of Jesse Villalobos. Tragedy and fate changed that.Edwards and Kaufman's son, Kasey Kaufman, was killed in an automobile accident in April. Doctors were unable to save him but they did save five of his organs, and through Kasey's death came life.Jesse Villalobos had been on dialysis for four years and desperately needed a kidney. He received Kasey's.After getting strong enough, Villalobos said he wanted to meet his donor family. Edwards said she knew she wanted to meet whoever Kasey was able to save."I just felt it was important to get to meet Rebecca and Kevin just to say, 'Thank you,'" Villalobos said. The feeling was mutual."I was so hell-bent (on) finding somebody that had received something from Kasey," Edwards said. The families met soon after the surgery at a fundraiser for Kaufman to help offset medical expenses. When Villalobos and his wife found out about the fundraiser, they said they were determined to attend. They said they have no regrets."Any little comforting thing I bring them, I wanted to do," Villalobos said."I am so absolutely grateful to God that I have him," Edwards said. "I know he has a part of my son in him, and it just warms my heart."Kaufman said he was a little slow to the idea of meeting Villalobos, but now he is glad they have been able to spend time together."It's taken me awhile to come to terms, but my son was put on this Earth to save five individual lives and (Villalobos is) one of them," Kevin said. The two families have now met on several different occasions and have exchanged phone calls and texts. They also plan to spend part of Thanksgiving together. If you would like to help with medical expenses or donate to a scholarship fund, you can donate to the Kasey Kaufman Memorial Fund at any area Bank of America.
