Local girl who passed away honored at Rose Parade

KENNEWICK, Wash. - A local girl who passed away is being honored at the Rose Parade in Pasadena.

12 year old Alex Hatley and 11 year old Taylor Teft lost their lives last year after a tragic accident on Interstate 182, but their legacy didn't stop there. In fact each of the girls was an organ donor."I miss my daughter every second of the day. She was an extremely loving child so I have no doubt that she watches over the people that she did help," said Jamie Peterson, Taylor's mom.

Taylor donated four organs and her corneas. Her mom says she knew the importance of helping people at a young age and always wanted to give back. "She said, well when I'm 16 and I get my license I'm going to be an organ donor too. It was sort of a 'duh' type of thing for her, why wouldn't you do that," said Petersen.

Taylor helped out 5 different people including a 2 year old boy in desperate need of a kidney. This caused the non-profit organization, Donate Life, to honor Taylor in a floragraph for the Rose Parade. Taylor is one of 60 people being honored in the country and for her family and friends they are just happy she's leaving behind a legacy."Now she's touching strangers, people who never knew her and it's a great honor to be her mother to know that, that was her gift to this world," said Peterson.

Peterson says there are many misconceptions about being a organ donor and the best thing to do is to educate yourself. For more information on organ donation click on the following link.
