A Newton man killed nine years ago will be remembered at the 2011 Rose Parade in Pasadena, California, for the lives he saved.

Twenty-nine-year-old Scott Phillips from Newton, died in Arizona in 2001 after being attacked outside a sports bar. His family donated his organs, saving eight other lives.

Scott's mom, Sally Phillips, who is a nurse at Wesley Medical Center, and his brother and sisters are heading to California today. They have been invited by event organizers for the Rose Parade to ride on a float honoring Scott.

Scott's picture will be created out of flowers on a float called "The Donate Life Rose Parade Float." This year's theme is 'Seize the Day,' a phrase Scott used all the time.

"He coined that phrase from Dead Poets Society. He just wanted to encourage everyone to live everyday to the fullest", said Scott's mom.

The Phillips family helped make Scott's picture for the float. On New Year's Day, they will have front row seats to watch the parade.
