Meredith McCall received a kidney, pancreas
A Northwest Tucson resident who received a kidney and pancreas transplant in August is riding in the Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif., this New Year’s Day.
Meredith McCall, daughter of Jay and Cathy McCall, is the lone Arizonan riding on the Donate Life float “Seize the Day!” The entry celebrates the gifts of organ, tissue and cornea donation, a release said.
In August 2010, McCall had her transplant after a long battle with Type 1 diabetes. She no longer has diabetes because of the surgery, the release continued.
McCall’s tie to organ donation is personal beyond her own transplant. Her brother, Jim McCall, died in 1998 in a motorcycle accident. Jim became an organ and tissue donor, saving six people.
Meredith and her parents decorated his floragraph – an artistic portrait created with floral materials – that will be part of Donate Life float. Cathy and Jay McCall are traveling to Pasadena to watch their daughter ride the float and to see their son be part of it.
Thee Donate Life float celebrates lives that have been saved, and shows the need for Americans to sign up as organ, tissue and cornea donors. More than 110,000 people in America are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant, more than 2,000 of them in Arizona.
