Penn Valley's Teresa Woodall plans to watch Pasadena's Jan. 1 Parade of Roses as her late sister, Rose Anna Friguglietti, is honored for a gift she gave long ago.
Friguglietti, then living in Los Banos, Calif., died in a car accident in 1988 at age 20. As an organ donor, Friguglietti's corneas were given to two people, allowing them to see again, Woodall said.
On Monday, Woodall, an employee at the Grass Valley Department of Motor Vehicles, worked on a likeness of her sister's visage to be displayed on a float in the Rose Parade.
The “floragraph,” a portrait of Friguglietti made entirely of floral seeds, will be positioned on the float entered by organ donation coalition Donate Life California.
“She wanted her death to bring life to others,” Woodall said.
Donate Life works to sign California drivers up as organ donors.
“The best chance to sign up to donate is when you're at the DMV,” said Katherine Doolittle of Nevada City, a Donate Life board member and Nevada County outreach representative.
Of California's nearly 24 million registered drivers, about 7.5 million are organ donors. Donate Life officials hope to raise that number by about a half-million this winter, Doolittle said.
