Selflessly giving the ultimate gift of life,South Africa
"Three Rivers" staring Alex O'Loughlin
December 9, 2010

By Munyaradzi Vomo | TONIGHT

"I will give you my right arm just to show you how much I love you," said a 16-year-old version of me years ago when she was breaking up with me.

Oh please, don't judge me, you too have said something you thought was romantic at the time, but sounds really ridiculous now.

Anyway, still on giving away body parts, there are people who actually mean it when they say they will give parts of themselves to other human beings. This usually is not in a desperate attempt to save a relationship, but to save a life.

Three Rivers is a new show that portrays these lives of the noble individuals. I don't mind dying |and having someone use my smoke-free lungs or healthy kidneys, but doing it and having to live with it is another story altogether. This is the premise of Three Rivers.

Alex O'Loughlin stars as a gifted surgeon who deals with transplants on a daily basis. His job also entails taking care of would-be donors before surgery.

We can all imagine what goes through the mind of the would-be donor who faces urgent surgery.

We also see the side of the hope-less recipients who wait patiently for someone to donate an organ and save their life. Remember the plot in the Denzel Washington movie John Q? That's what we are dealing with here and more. For instance, in the first episode, a pregnant woman can only give birth if she receives a heart transplant. Now, how do you deal with such a problem?

To add some fun to this dark subject, we have recurring characters in the storyline, mainly hospital staff who give it a bit of an ER or Private Practice feel.

Since it has done well in the US we are set for an intriguing 13 episodes of the first season.

The show is an emotional roller-coaster which deals with relevant issues in our lives. As you keep watching you keep wondering: if you had to give any part of yourself (and I'm not talking hair, ladies) what would it be?

Three Rivers starts on M-Net Series on Monday at 9.30pm
