Sledding tragedy brings hope on organ transplants
By: All Hungary News

Organ transplants have been available in Hungary since 1973, but the number of people who donate their organs is less than the average in Europe. The latest figures show that the number of organ transplantations was 354 last year, down from 389 in 2005, while spending on these fell slightly, from Ft 2.5 billion to Ft 2.4 billion. This is the reverse of international trends.

Ádám Dancs, who was fatally injured in the accident, had been sledding on a slope leading to a road without parental supervision. He and another child, an eight-year-old girl, were hit by an incoming car which pushed them on several meters. The driver had not consumed alcohol. After the accident, a group of 50 people approached the driver, damaged her car and beat another driver who was not involved in the accident.

Ádám was operated on in Budapest the same day, but his condition improved only temporarily and was declared brain dead a few days later. Blikk reported his heart was given to a six-year-old boy named Máté, but doctors denied this information.

The boy's father said they had offered his organs so that his heart could go on living and beating in another child.

The little girl injured in the same accident also suffered critical injuries, but her condition is improving. On December 7, she woke up from coma, her breathing machine was removed, and she started talking. She had suffered a broken skull.
