Woman saved by organ donation gives back

A woman who received two lungs from a donor is using her new lease on life to help other people who need transplants. eddie garcia spoke with the family in their home— and he has their story of giving a different type of gift this holiday season. manuelita jaramillo was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2005 – doctors told her she had only a month to live. her only option was a double lung transplant – and when a donor became available – she and her husband tony dropped everything and undertook the risky procedure. it worked, but she had a long and painful recovery – that was then. now it’s a different story, i have my lungs back and my grandkids have me busy. manuelita can live her life just like before – except this time she savors every moment with her loved ones. they come over to grandma’s and say grandma let’s play a game and they have me on the floor and they have me outside playing ball with them. but the jaramillos don’t want to keep this gift just to themselves – they’re now helping others who need transplants. i know what i went through and i want to promote organ donation to other people. both head the organ transplant awareness program – or otap. tony serves as the president. we have about 50 percent of new mexicans signed up but our with is that we can push that number even hire. the couple councils other people needing donated organs – going all over the state to spread awareness. their organization otap – even has a scholarship program for highschool seniors – all the while encouraging organ donation. it’s tremendous to have my wife back and doing so well that we can do so many things. now the couple is living life to the fullest: spending time with family. even dancing in italy on a recent trip. not for a second taking for granted – a single breath. there’s hope if you have faith, there’s hope.
