TRANSPLANT HISTORY SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA'S FIRST HEART TRANSPLANT @ HARBOR GENERAL HOSPITAL, FEBRUARY 19, 1969
Many of us are aware that the first deceased donor heart transplant took place in 1967 in Cape Town, South Africa by Dr. Christiaan Bernard.
Two years later, on February 19th, Harbor General Hospital (now Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, California) was the site of Southern California's first heart transplant. Dr J. Michael Criley can still be seen making rounds and seeing patients.
