University at Buffalo Holds Musical Review for UNYTS and Organ Donation Awareness

BUFFALO, NY (April 5, 2011) – What can YOU do to help save a life? An easy way to help is to attend the “Help The Beat Go On,” a special event on Tuesday (April 5) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Union Lobby on the UB North Campus in Amherst. Sponsored by the University at Buffalo Department of Communication Advanced Public Relations Course, this musical review will feature performances by UB’s only all male a-capella group the Buffalo Chips, as well as the UB Step Troupe and former UB Idol, Danny Stafford.

Help The Beat Go On is a collaborative effort of UB’s COM453 class and the Upstate New York Transplant Services. The event strives to bring awareness to organ donation as well as encourage people to sign donation cards to become registered as organ and tissue donors. Help The Beat Go On will also feature a variety of testimonials from UNYTS donors and donor recipients. There will be pizza, cotton candy, cookie decorating, and a variety of games, prizes and raffles throughout the day.

Additionally, there will be a Bloodmobile on Monday, April 11 in room 210 of the Student Union from 11am to 4pm. The event will be co-sponsored by True Blue, the official student section of UB Athletics. Sign up is available on a walk-in basis or via the Keep The Beat Going page on Facebook.

Each year there are nearly 100,000 individuals in the United States waiting for transplants and more than 6,500 people a year die before they receive the necessary organ. One organ donor can save up to 8 lives and donating blood one time can save up to 3 lives. Donation cards will be available at both events and via the Facebook and Twitter pages.

Upstate New York Transplant Services has become one of the leading organ procurement organizations in the country since its founding in 1981. UNYTS services the eight counties of Western New York and has achieved a 90 percent familial consent rate consistently, in comparison with the national average of consent regarding donations at 60 percent. UNYTS strives to help donor families, coordinate the donations process, and increase awareness and knowledge about organ, tissue, eye, and blood donation.
