Illinois residents now can join organ and tissue donor registry by smart phone

CHICAGO (AP) — Got a smart phone? Now you can use it to register as an organ and tissue donor.

Donate Life Illinois has launched a new site that allows users to quickly sign up as donors on their smart phones. Registering assures that a person's wishes about organ donation are honored.

The site is DonateLifeIllinois.org. Registration requires an Illinois driver's license or Illinois ID card number.

Donate Life Illinois is a coalition of agencies responsible for organ, tissue, eye and blood and marrow donation in Illinois.

The coalition says that, while 87 percent of adult Illinois residents think registering as an organ donor is the right thing to do, only 60 percent actually are registered.

More than 4,800 people in Illinois are waiting for organ transplants.
