Pineville Hospital promotes organ donation in statewide effort to save lives

PINEVILLE — Pineville Community Hospital is one of many Kentucky hospitals and organizations promoting organ and tissue donation awareness by flying or displaying flags that read “Donation Saves Lives.”

Most facilities only fly their flags during the month of April; however, community members can see the flag flying year round at Pineville Hospital in an effort to constantly raise awareness of organ donation.

Kentucky’s flag-flying campaign is part of a national effort to bolster organ donor registries in April, which is National Donate Life Month.

“Organ and tissue donation can save and improve lives in our community, around Kentucky and across the nation. And Pineville Hospital wants to help drive that point home with this symbolic flag. Joining the Donor Registry gives hope to those in need of organ and tissue transplants,” said Dinah Jarvis, chief nursing officer, in a press release.

More than 700 Kentucky residents are waiting to receive life-saving hearts, lungs, kidneys and other organs. The need continues to grow throughout the state and country. In fact, 18 people die every day in the United States waiting for an organ transplant, and the national waiting list, currently, is more than 110,000 people.

The best way to honor those who gave the ultimate gift of life and to celebrate the new life of transplant recipients is to register on the Kentucky Organ Donor Registry. The registry is a safe and secure electronic database where a person’s wishes regarding donation will be carried out as requested.

Joining the Kentucky Donor Registry is as easy as logging on to the secure website www.donatelifeky.org or signing up when you renew your driver’s license. The donor registry enables family members to know that you chose to save and enhance lives through donation. Kentucky’s “First Person Consent” laws mean that the wishes of an individual on the registry will be granted accordingly.

Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA) is dedicated to saving lives through organ and tissue donation and transplantation. KODA is an independent, non-profit organ and tissue procurement agency; and was formed to establish a statewide educational and procurement network.

KODA serves 114 counties in Kentucky, four counties in southern Indiana and two counties in western West Virginia. The KODA service area includes 112 hospitals, three transplant centers and a multi-cultural population of four million.
