BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) - — Volunteers with “Donate Life Louisiana” set up shop at the state capitol Tuesday to spread the word about organ donation. Local mothers Rhonda Porta and Adriane Mcrae are sharing their stories about giving and receiving the gift of life, in hopes that more people will become donors.
Porta’s daughter, Alexis, died at 16, after suffering a brain aneurysm.
"The most horrible thing that can happen as a mom happened to us when we lost Alexis and I feel like what a positive thing to come out of such a negative," says Porta. Alexis’ organs saved five lives.
McRae’s son, Smith, is an active toddler now, after a life-saving liver transplant as an infant.
"He was only six months when he actually got his liver and you can be 80, 90; be donors - it doesn’t matter,” says McRae. “The medical technology now - modern science and God it’s amazing."
You can sign up to be an organ donor at any office of motor vehicles. For more information visit www.lopa.org
