The Tyler Palmer & Mike Casey Memorial Golf Outing will start at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Whiteford Valley Golf Club.
Tyler, 14, was an organ donor for seven people after he died in 2008; Mr. Casey, 61, was a kidney/pancreas recipient who died in 2004.
Their families had hosted separate golf outings to honor them.
The event will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at Whiteford Valley Golf Club in Ottawa Lake, Michigan with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Lunch and an awards ceremony will immediately follow the golf with a tentative start time of 1 p.m.
The outing is the union of the Mike Casey Memorial, held in years 2005-2009, and the Tyler James Palmer Memorial, held in 2009 and 2010. In addition to paying tribute to both Tyler and Mike, the outing is held to raise funds for the scholarships that bear their names at Start High School and Clay High School, respectively. Further, in the past both outings shared an additional common goal: to raise awareness on the importance of organ donation. Prior to his passing in 2004 at the age of 61, Mike underwent a successful kidney transplant in 2000 followed by a pancreas transplant in 2001 and became a strong advocate for the gift of life. Tyler James gave that gift of life to seven people, the gift of sight to two and touched the lives of many others through tissue donation. He was involved in a tragic accident that took his life in May 2008 at the age of 14. Additional information on Tyler and Mike is enclosed.
We will be continuing our partnership with Life Connection of Ohio, the non-profit organ procurement organization serving Northwest and West Central Ohio. In 2010, LCO coordinated the recovery of organs from 65 donors, providing 230 life saving transplants. Currently there are more than 110,000 people on the National Transplant Waiting List, 3,300 of which are from Ohio. The organ shortage continues to grow at a staggering rate, with another person added to the waiting list every 11 minutes. Sadly, 18 people die every day because the demand for organs outweighs the supply. The good news: One donor can save up to eight lives and enhance the lives of up to 50 more. Representatives from LCO will be on hand at the outing to answer your questions and assist you with signing up to become an organ donor. We will also be donating a portion of the proceeds from the outing to help their cause.
