There are more than 110,000 patients on waiting lists for organ and tissue transplants; nearly 1,800 of them are children. But, if 2010 is any indication, there will be less than 29,000 organ transplants performed this year.
“Transplantation gives hope to thousands of people with organ failure and provides many others with active and renewed lives,” Helen W. Bottenfield, chairwoman of Donate Life America, said. “It is one of the most remarkable success stories in the history of medicine. But despite continuing advances in medicine and technology, the need for organs and tissue is vastly greater than the number available for transplantation.”
In an effort to honor and celebrate the hundreds of thousands of donors and recipients whose lives have been affected by organ, eye, and tissue donation, Donate Life America has launched the “Flags Across America” campaign. Now, in front of the Clarinda Regional Health Center, a “Donate Life” flag is flying to help raise awareness.
The Donate Life America campaign is being spearheaded by the Iowa Donor Network, which maintains the official donor registry in Iowa. The organization hopes to attract those who would like to make their donor status known at the registry website, www.IowaDonorRegistry.org.
“Iowa hospitals are critical to the successful recovery and transplantation of organs and tissue,” Iowa Donor Network CEO Suzanne Conrad said. “Iowa again led the nation in the number of people consenting to organ, tissue and eye donation by marking ‘yes’ on a driver’s license or identification card. In 2010, 67 percent of those receiving or renewing a driver’s license or identification card consented to donation in this way.”
