Run to boost awareness of organ donation

GEORGE TOWN: In raising awareness of organ donation, the Malaysian Society of Transplantation, Ministry of Health, Penang Amateur Athletic Association, Novartis and Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa are organising the Race Against Time -- Run For Life 2011.

The June 5 run which begins at Rasa Sayang resort will start at 7.30am.

It will cover a route of 6km including a 1.6km run on the beach

"The objective of the race is to increase public awareness of organ donation and to encourage a healthy lifestyle to prevent the occurrence of chronic diseases," said organising chairman Dr Rafidah Abdullah.

Dr Rafidah is a member of the Malaysian Society of Transplantation and a consultant nephrologist at Hospital Selayang in Selangor.

The race is divided into seven categories and is limited to 1,000 participants.

The categories and registration fees are as follows: Men's senior veteran -- 50 and above (RM25), Men's junior veteran -- 40 to 49 (RM25), Men's senior -- 18 and above (RM25) and Men's junior -- 13 and under-17 (RM10).

Women's veteran -- 40 and above (RM25), Women's senior -- 18 and above and Women's junior -- 13 and under-17 (RM10).

Prizes will be given to the first five top winners while participants who complete the run within 90 minutes will receive a medal.
