Boy Sells Kidney for iPad
Source: Macworld Australia

THIS IS ONE OF THE MANY REASONS WHY IT IS ILLEGAL TO BUY OR SELL ORGANS IN THE UNITED STATES.

Warning: if a family member returns home with a muscatel-coloured scar and a brand-new 64GB iPad 2, you should probably be concerned.

According to the Shanghai Daily, the mother of 17-year old Chinese kid became suspicious when her son turned up with an iPhone 4, iPad 2 and one less kidney.

The boy, known only by his surname Zheng, researched black market organ donation online, then travelled north to the city of Chenzhou in the Hunan province, where a kidney-selling agent and a surgeon relieved him of his internal organs.

“I wanted to buy an iPad 2 but could not afford it,” the boy told a TV reporter . “A broker contacted me on the Internet and said he could help me sell one kidney for 20,000 yuan (around $3000).”

The ‘businessman’ had apparently contracted out the urology department of the Chenzhou 198 hospital. But, the No. 198 hospital was apparently unqualified to perform an organ transplant and Zheng, with his health deteriorating, now regrets the transaction.

While the boy’s mother and local police attempted to contract the kidney dealer, his mobile phone was ‘always powered off.’ The case remains under investigation.
