Donate Life inspires honorees
Kudos honors unsung medical heroes
By AJ Marechal | Variety
The Donate Life Hollywood Inspire Awards mixed stars with unsung medical heroes on June 22 at the Avalon.
Stacy McKee, writer and producer on "Grey's Anatomy," was honored with an Inspire Award, and couldn't help but remark that she felt "totally outclassed" by her presenter, Emily Fennell.
"She's the first hand transplant patient, and I'm just a geeky television writer!" exclaimed McKee.
Jack Black was introduced as a "super nice guy" before taking the stage to spotlight his work with the Renal Support Network. At the podium, he joked, "That's my super-hero name: Super Nice. Doesn't sound very dangerous, but I'll kill you with my kindness."
"Glee's" surly, silent pianist Brad Ellis dubbed himself the "most famous person in the room," adding, "as long as Jack Black is still in the bathroom."
Mark Hentemann from "Family Guy" relished his show's Inspire Award win, saying, "Tonight is the first night 'Family Guy' has won an award for being medically accurate. Eat your heart out, 'Simpsons.' "
But it was Ann Lopez who drew the biggest laughs. After discussing how she donated a kidney to her now ex-husband, George Lopez, she quickly dispelled rumors regarding the divorce: "In case any of you are wondering, no, I don't want the kidney back."
