Eighty-six Aussies in transplant games
Jim O'Rourke | Sydney Morning Herald

AUSTRALIA'S team of 86 organ transplant recipients began competition at the 18th World Transplant Games in Sweden today. They joined another 1000 competitors from 50 countries taking on 13 sports at the biennial event, which runs until June 24.

There is one criterion for competing - every competitor has to have had a successful organ or bone marrow transplant.

The opening ceremony began at 10pm Sydney time last night in Gotaplatsen, a large public square on Gothenburg's main street.

Transplant Australia's chief executive, Chris Thomas, who is in Gothenburg, said the games gave participants inspiration to remain active.

''The Transplant Games, both here and overseas, have a great record in increasing awareness and influencing organ donor rates.''The first scheduled event is the women's three-kilometre mini-marathon. Other events include cycling, golf and 10-pin bowling.

The patron is Sweden's Prince Daniel, who had a kidney transplant in 2009, shortly after becoming engaged to Crown Princess Victoria.

Transplant Australia's campaign Journey of Hope aims to get Australians to talk about donation, encourages people to register and attracts funding to support organ recipients and their families.
