Run/Walk held at the Cal State Fullerton campus. During National Donate Life Month, OneLegacy (the Southern California affiliate of the national Donate Life Organization) touts this race as the largest organ and tissue donation awareness event in the United States.

Team Mike is coordinated by the Mike McKay Memorial Foundation. Mike died in an avalanche near Mountain High Ski Resort in January 2008 and subsequently was entered into the organ and tissue donor program administered by OneLegacy. His family established the non-profit foundation in his honor.

The primary focus of the foundation is to award scholarships to kids who demonstrate qualities people admired most in Mike. The foundation has established standing scholarship programs with Serrano High School, the Victor Valley College Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Academy, and with the City of Solana Beach Life Guards. The foundation also maintains the “Good Karma” Scholarship program which recognizes young scholars on an “ad hoc” basis. In May, the foundation announced a new affiliation with the National Ski Patrol that recognizes its “Young Ski Patroller of the Year.” In addition, the foundation has created two new NSP scholarship programs related to advanced avalanche training and participation at the International Snow Science Workshop.

Team Mike is the foundation’s primary fundraising program. Runner fees, sponsorship donations and other proceeds benefit the Donate Life-California Donor Registry and the foundation’s Scholarship Fund. Since 2009, the foundation has raised more than $10,000 for Donate Life. In addition, the foundation has awarded more than $14,000 in scholarships through these seven different programs. More than 10,000 people ran or walked at the most recent event, and 116 of these participants wore the distinctive red T-shirts of Team Mike.
