Teaming up for Donation – “Danny’s Team”
Like many Ohioans, Danny Thomas wasn’t always a registered organ and tissue donor, he had never really considered it. That changed in 2009 when he went to renew his license with fiancé Laci Weintrub.
“When he said he wasn’t a donor I asked him, ‘Why in the world not?’” said Laci. “I’m not typically a very confrontation person but the situation upset me.” Laci explained to Danny the impact one donor could make, telling him, “You have the ability to save others, everyone does.” She waited in the car until Danny finished renewing his license.
“When he got in the car he handed me his license and there it was, that tiny red heart and those three words that are so powerful: Ohio Organ Donor,” said Laci. “Of course I smiled and hugged him!”
Just eight months later, Danny died in a motorcycle accident on the way home from work. He was 22 years old. Laci was grateful that they had discussed donation and she was able to honor Danny’s wishes to donate. Danny was a tissue and eye donor, potentially impacting up to 50 lives.
“He was an amazing man,” said Laci. “When I think of how much it hurts that he is gone, the pain is almost unbearable. But then I think of the lives he improved and it makes the hardest time of our lives just a little bit easier.”
For the third year, “Danny’s Team” will participate in the Dash for Donation to honor the young man who meant so much to so many people. “It’s amazing to see how many people are passionate about the same thing,” said Laci of the race.
Laci and Danny’s 4-year-old daughter, Natalie, will walk beside her mom in the 5K along with family members and friends on July 9.
“I’m an advocate for this amazing cause because it helps me feel closer to Danny and gives our daughter a way to celebrate her daddy’s life,” said Laci.
