Transplant star is world champion
Source: Luton Today

LUTON cycling sensation Ottilie Morgan, 29, went to the World Transplant Games in Sweden with one aim in mind – to bring back gold.

And the Barnfield College sports teacher achieved her ambition on Sunday when she won the 20km road race and was declared world champion.

Her proud husband Lee told the Luton News from Gothenburg: “We were absolutely ecstatic.

“She was competing against the best in the world and an Australian girl was well out in front for five of the six laps.

“But Ottilie outraced her and picked up gold by four seconds. She wouldn’t have settled for anything less.

“She punched the air as she crossed the finishing line. It was very emotional, absolutely awesome.

“Her tactics were just perfect. It was an amazing feeling – you don’t get much better than that.”

The woman who bagged three golds at the British Transplant Games last year was a talented footballer and coach until a kidney transplant put paid to her career.

Luckily her mum was a perfect match but Ottilie is keen to raise awareness of the need for more organ donors.

She admitted she was devastated after the operation: “But I’m very competitive and took to cycling to regain my fitness.”

Lee said: “You wouldn’t think so much good could come out of something as traumatic as a transplant.”
