A HEART transplant athlete from Kimbolton is looking to add another remarkable chapter to her story by winning more medals at the World Transplant Games – currently taking place in Sweden.
Maggie Gambrill, who had the life-saving procedure at Papworth Hospital back in 2002, is representing Great Britain at her fourth World Games.
Ahead of the event, she said: “I am the proud recipient of a donor heart and I have a quality of life back that I never imagined possible.
“Transplant sport has become my focus and has taken me down a wonderful path of new challenges, new experiences and new friends.
“Every medal I win is dedicated to my donor and family and I am very much looking forward to taking part again.”
Maggie’s recovery and success has also been applauded by Steven Tsui, who is the Director of Transplant Services at Papworth Hospital.
He said: “We are really proud of Maggie in being selected to take part in the World Transplant Games.
“It is very rewarding for us to see our patients making the most of the new lives they have been given and theirs is an excellent example of how lives can be turned around.”
The Games consists of a seven-day series of sporting events and represents the largest organ donor awareness event in the world.
Athletes are selected following their outstanding performances at the British Transplant Games held annually.
Back in 2010, Maggie won a glut of medals at the British event including gold for badminton, silver for tennis singles as well as bronze medals in table tennis singles and the 400m and 200m track events.
She is part of a 133-strong Great Britain team in Sweden, who have joined 1,000 others from 55 countries around the world, all of whom have undergone an organ transplant.
