LifeHero Canada, a non profit organ donor awareness organization that provides information on organ donation across Canada has officially launched today.
“We are very pleased, after months of hard work to finally be able to launch this organization. Now we must turn our collective focus to help increase awareness of the need for more organ donor’s right across this nation. Part of the reason we started LifeHero was the lack of consistency and the confusion Canadians were having on how to become a registered organ donor. With each province having a different method, the message sometimes gets lost; therefore we are striving for each Province to make their provincial health card the sole document for organ donation” says Steve Ditty, co-founder LifeHero Canada.
The demand for organ and tissue donation is expected to rise by 152% over the next ten years and although Canadian public awareness of organ donation is somewhat prevalent, our knowledge and understanding of how to express our intent to donate is low.
Thousands of Canadians are presently waiting for organ transplants right now. With Canada having one of the lower donor participation rates compared to other countries it is imperative to turn awareness into action.
Fellow Director Robert Decarie adds “I’m extremely pleased to have been asked to be a part of Life Hero. When the idea was first presented to me I was amazed at the size of the task that lay ahead. But I firmly believe we can make a difference by increasing awareness and changing perceptions. We can't keep losing good people due to a lack of national organization and political will. Life Hero will fill the void and eventually unite all involved in organ and tissue donation in Canada.
LifeHero’s board of directors also includes Brian E. Ditty who brings with him a unique personal perspective. Brian has over 32 years experiencing first-hand what it is like to be on a waiting list for a life saving organ donation. He has already gone through dozens of operations, two kidney transplants and is currently undergoing life saving dialysis treatments. His experiences will offer LifeHero a front line perspective on what patients are currently going through and on how our organization can make a difference to them. Brian is no stranger to the education and promotion of organ donation. He
took part in the ground breaking book ‘Heroes’ which used transplant patients telling their own unique story's to help other patients deal with the journey of waiting for a life saving organ. Brian adds, "I am very proud to be a part of this organization as the need for education on organ donation is still out there"
