Donate Life, Australia

Source: CIT Student Association | CITSA
The latest organ and tissue donation statistics for the ACT region shows the generosity of ten multi organ donor families that transformed the lives of 32 Australians while the sight of 39 people has been restored by the 39 corneal donations.

The Organ donation rates in the ACT have been improving year by year – from four multi organ donors in 2006, to five in 2008, eight in 2009 and ten in 2010. This year there have been 13 eye tissue donors in the ACT and one multi organ donation. These donations pay tribute to the generosity of the donors and their families and the dedication of our medical staff in making the gift of sight and life possible.

Every resident in Canberra has the potential to help save lives. This is why the Australian Organ and Tissue Authority launched in November 2009 a national public awareness program to encourage every Australian to discover the facts about donation, to decide to become an organ donor and to discuss with their family and friends so that they know each other’s wishes and that any day is a good day to talk about organ and tissue donation.

If people decide to become organ donors they can also register on the Australian Organ Donor Register which is the official national register for organ and tissue donation. It keeps a record of whether a person wishes to be a donor and of the organs and tissues they agree to donate. If you are on the register, your family will be asked to give their consent. However, you do not have to register to be a donor. If you are not registered, your family will still be asked to give consent. That is why it is important that your family knows your wishes.
