The Donate Life Walk at Lake Elizabeth on Saturday drew about 500 registered participants and a host of business sponsors to Fremont, raising enough money to expand the annual ceremonies honoring those hundreds of families which provide the gift of life, organizers said.
About $45,000 was raised at the event. Organizers say funds will help the California Transplant Donor Network hold its "Donor Family Gatherings" in three locations from Reno to Fresno.
This year's Donor Family gathering was held only in Hayward.
"You give hope to the more than 10,000 people in Northern California who are waiting for a lifesaving transplant that they will receive an organ or tissue transplant," Cindy Siljestrom, the donor network's chief executive officer told the crowd Saturday.
The California Transplant Donor Network supports organ and tissue donation, reaching out to the public with the need to save lives by registering as a donor, and by working with families who decide to donate organs and tissues.
Last year, 274 people donated organs and 1,105 donated tissue.
