Victoria's lung transplant program has been temporarily cut back due to lack of funding, causing uncertainty and fear among patients waiting for life-saving surgery.
In an extraordinary series of events, the federal government last night revealed it had called on Victorian Health Minister David Davis to immediately boost funding to The Alfred Hospital's lung transplant unit because it was struggling to perform transplants.
Federal Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing Catherine King said the hospital, which is responsible for performing half of Australia's lung transplants, had effectively put its program on hold until October 10 because of a lack of funding from the state government.
